Peru protests – indigenous people march for their rights

lima_police_572575alimaPeruvian lawmakers suspended a controversial law on Wednesday that eased restrictions on lumber harvesting in the Amazon rain forest. Opposition politicians protest during the session in Lima.

lima_parliament_572576aPeru’s Amazonian indigenous peoples have been resisting since last year a plan by President Alan Garcia to use their traditional lands for greater development, typically of oil and gas, but also for logging and biofuel crops.

Students joined indigenous people in Lima, Peru to march in their thousands to back Amazon Indians resisting oil and natural gas exploration on their land. Demonstrators hold a banner reading “The jungle is not for sale”.
